Counselling

How I Work

Before becoming a counsellor, I worked in a number of diverse areas including a call centre, a watermill, hospitals, a prison and as a public artist. From 2016, I worked as a counselling tutor, teaching counselling and listening skills, a job which allowed me to constantly re-evaluate my working practices and explore creative counselling interventions. I now run Step by Step Counselling College in Newton Abbot, delivering a variety of counselling training courses.

I am a member of the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society and I operate within their code of ethics and as such undertake regular supervision with a qualified Supervisor.

I trained as an integrative counsellor working in Person Centred, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Gestalt models.  As part of my ongoing professional development, I undertake regular ongoing training and have completed training in other models such as Transactional Analysis (TA) and Mindfulness.

By combining traditional counselling techniques with proven ecotherapy practices, I aim to provide you with a safe, caring, space to work through whatever you want to explore.

There are many proven benefits of being outside to both mental and physical well being.  The walking element of outside therapy literally takes us on a journey together, giving choices of which path to take, encouraging us to find new ways of finding where we are going.

The way I work, is tailored to your individual needs, with each session taking its own shape and with elements of each therapy being interwoven into my work as and when appropriate.

Fees

The cost of a 60 minute session is £50.00 and 90 minute sessions are £75.00. Reductions are availble for students and NHS workers. If you feel that cost maybe a barrier to you, please ask about low cost sessions. I have a limited number of places available to people on low incomes. If there are none available at the time of your enquiry, I am more than happy to add your name to my waiting list.

Where I work

Where we work, will be tailored to your preference and can change as our work continues.

I also offer on-line and room-based counselling if you feel this is something you would prefer.  These ways of working are not exclusive, and we can move from outside to inside/on-line sessions and back again. This can be particularly useful in times of social distancing measures or to accommodate temporary changes in circumstances.

Wherever we choose to work together, be it side by side in the open air, connected by technology or a combination of the two, you will have my full attention and I will listen with sensitivity, acceptance and with the aim of helping you explore and address your issues at a pace that suits you.

Occasionally the weather plays a more dominant part in our sessions.  Suitable clothing (including sturdy, waterproof footwear) may be needed as part of the experiential nature of the work is to be immersed in the landscape.

  • Simon helped me to cope with many different issues, including building a better relationship with my Mum. I will be forever grateful to him for helping me at a time of utter crisis in my life. If you have reservations about counselling, just give ecotherapy a try. If you don’t like it, at least you have done a bit of exercise in the beautiful outdoors…

    Feedback from an ecotherapy client

  • Although the thought of being outdoors where other people are present, may seem odd when you are trying to work through a difficult situation, what is very clear is that everybody is in their own world and not paying any attention to you. It is very private. Simon is a great therapist. I initially worried that I may have struggled to talk to a man, especially about female issues, but it really did not play any part into how I conversed. I felt completely comfortable.
